EDA position on the proposal for a Directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment

While the dairy sector supports the overarching goal of reducing plastic marine litter, we question the consistency of the Directive with the current EU policy framework for packaging, and we advocate for the exclusion of dairy products form the scope of the proposal. Dairy products – being mostly consumed in household – do not contribute to plastic marine litter, and should remain under the provisions of the amended Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD). Nevertheless, the dairy industry recognises the need of reducing plastic packaging and increase recycling, as long as food hygiene is not compromised. For this reason, the dairy industry is involved in many initiatives to further streamline the environmental impact of its packaging and strives to also find improved solutions for collection and recycling.
